Socadel, five months on: good figures and a proposal before the dry season (Cameroon) — Journal du Cameroun

I published an op-ed in Journal du Cameroun on the first five months of Socadel, the operator in charge of electricity distribution in Cameroon.

In brief

  • Measurable results. Between April and August, outage alerts fell by 70%. Coverage of the North network rose from about 70% to over 95%, and the South network now stands at 98%. Socadel makes 11,000 new connections a month and serves more than 2.4 million households.
  • A financial balance that is still fragile. Producing a kilowatt-hour costs 118 CFA francs, against an average of 85 francs paid by customers; household tariffs have not moved since 2012, and the State must compensate 79 billion CFA francs of tariff subsidies for 2025.
  • My proposal. Publish the average length of outages by region every month, so progress can be tracked transparently before the dry season of late 2026 and early 2027.
